Love Doesn’t Have to Be Earned

My wife once told me something that changed how I think about parenting.

We should love our kids unconditionally, not show them more love when they behave a certain way.

Our kids should know that we’re not asking them to behave a certain way so we’ll love them more, or to avoid certain things because we’ll be unhappy with them. No matter what they do, they are loved.

Our love isn’t something they have to earn.
