The Meetup Two People Came To

Many years ago, I hosted a UX meetup.

I spent a whole day organizing it. Only two people showed up.

We had a great time anyway.

Almost a year later, one of them reached out to me about a job opening. I thanked her. I applied. I got the offer.

That became my first full-time UX job, and the turning point of my career.

“You were so lucky!” That’s what people usually say when I tell this story, because the job market was terrible at the time.

It was luck.

It was also preparation meeting opportunity.

We can’t control luck.

But we can increase our chances of being lucky.
