Selling Is Caring

If you see sales as taking money out of someone’s pocket, you’ll inevitably hit a wall in your head.

Selling is about awakening a desire, and a possibility, through genuine care.

So how do you bring care into sales?

First, manage your own energy. Recharge yourself before you try to influence anyone else.

Then, discover what people need. Stay curious. Ask thoughtful questions. Listen patiently. State the facts clearly. Notice how they respond. Appreciate their strengths.

Finally, meet the needs you’ve uncovered.

One of the most embarrassing things I can imagine is standing on a street corner, greeting strangers, and introducing a product. But the awkwardness I feel just imagining it reveals a part of me that’s afraid of being judged as a salesperson. And that’s exactly what I’d been missing in building my business.

So I started stepping outside my comfort zone. I took discovery calls. I introduced my services.

One thing I learned is to ask open-ended questions and stay curious about people’s motivations before imposing my own assumptions, which are sometimes surprisingly wrong.

I can learn so much by listening, asking, staying curious, and staying silent from time to time, instead of rushing to fill the blank space.

Knowing how to listen and how to ask are incredibly important skills. But the skills aren’t the hardest part.

Their foundation is genuinely caring.
